Migrating from Convert to ABTestly
Useful even if you don't switch — the side-by-side method works for validating any A/B tool change. Convert plan details verified on convert.com/pricing on 10 June 2026.
A platform switch sounds like a project. For most Convert setups it's an afternoon of real work plus a one-week validation run. This guide is the honest version: what moves automatically (almost nothing), what you rebuild (less than you think), and how to switch without ever flying blind.
What carries over, and what doesn't
| Asset | Carries over? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Snippet install | Swap one tag | Remove Convert's tag, add ABTestly's loader (under 1.5KB) in your <head> |
| Experiment definitions | Rebuilt | Convert experiences become ABTestly JSON experiments — usually faster to write than they were to click together |
| Variant code (JS/CSS) | Mostly copy-paste | Code written in Convert's code editor ports with minor changes; visual-editor changes need re-expressing as code |
| Goals | Rebuilt | Re-create click/pageview/custom goals in the dashboard |
| Targeting rules | Rebuilt | URL, device, and audience conditions map to ABTestly targeting |
| Historical results | Don't migrate | Export from Convert before canceling — your data stays in their account 3 months after cancellation |
| Visitor bucketing | Doesn't transfer | Visitors get re-bucketed; never port a half-finished test (see below) |
The rule that matters: finish or kill in-flight tests before switching. Bucketing can't transfer between tools, so a test moved mid-run loses its assignment history and its validity. Let running tests conclude in Convert, then start fresh.
The migration, step by step
1. Inventory what you actually use (30 min). List active experiences, goals, and targeting rules in Convert. Most accounts find a handful of live tests and a graveyard of drafts — you're migrating less than you think.
2. Create your ABTestly site and install the snippet (15 min). Sign up free, add your site, paste the snippet into your <head>. The quick start covers placement, and the consent guide covers wiring it to your CMP if you operate under GDPR.
3. Rebuild one experiment as a pilot (30–60 min). Pick your simplest live concept. Define variants in JSON, attach goals, set targeting, and use preview links to QA each variant on your live site before launch.
4. Run the side-by-side week (passive). This is the step that de-risks everything. Run the same test in both tools simultaneously on a 50/50 split — each tool measuring its own traffic — and compare after a week:
- Visitor counts within a few percent of each other (both tools dedupe visitors, so they should align)
- Conversion rates in the same range (how we count is public, so you can check the convention matches)
- No SRM warning in ABTestly (what that means)
If the numbers agree, you've validated the switch with data instead of trust. If they don't, email us with both reports and we'll find out why before you've committed to anything.
5. Move the rest and cancel (1–2 hours). Rebuild remaining experiments, export your Convert history, cancel the subscription. On Convert's monthly Growth plan there's no contract to wait out; on annual, your plan simply doesn't renew — so start the side-by-side a few weeks before renewal and the overlap costs you nothing extra.
Honest effort estimate
| Setup | Expected effort |
|---|---|
| 1–3 simple tests, code-editor based | ~½ day plus the validation week |
| 5–10 tests with custom goals and audiences | 1–2 days plus the validation week |
| Heavy visual-editor usage, complex targeting | 2–4 days — visual changes must be re-expressed as code; honestly evaluate whether code-first suits your team before starting (the vs page covers this) |
What you get back: the same 100K tested users for $179/mo instead of $399/mo — about $2,640/yr paying monthly, or $1,870/yr on annual billing (full math, including Convert Pro, the closest capability match, at $420/mo annually). Not sure yet whether to switch at all? Start with the Convert alternative page.
